Concrete5 Gets a Facelift With Twitter Bootstrap Concrete5 Gets a Facelift With Twitter Bootstrap(0)

Concrete5 today announced that it has redesigned the company’s admin dashboard to leverage Twitter Bootstrap.

An early pioneer of in-context editing, concrete5 gained popularity due to its ease of use for managing the content of websites. With this in mind, the company has leveraged the Twitter Bootstrap toolkit to offer a completely redesigned, centralized dashboard for backend administrative tasks with the release of concrete5.5.1.

While concrete5 is frequently used by webshops to deliver sites to clients who want to make edits on their own, many people who use concrete5 are DIY websites on budget webhosts where concrete5 is acting as a self-publishing platform. Over two-thirds of the traffic hitting concrete5 servers isn’t coming to its public facing community concrete5.org at all. The company knew it needed to improve the learning experience from within the concrete5 application itself.

“We started just wanting to make it easier to get around the Dashboard and browse our marketplace from within your own site, but we quickly realized we were going to have to touch every part of the interface to do it right,” said concrete5 designer Robert Huston. “Twitter Bootstrap gave us an amazing style guide, and much of the infrastructure we needed right out the box. With some addition icon work and thoughtful application of the rules the Twitter team devised, we were able to accomplish months of work in just weeks.”

“A lot of time has gone into tuning things under the hood with this release,” added Andrew Embler, CTO of concrete5. “Performance on a default install of concrete5 has improved dramatically in this version, and new features like Stacks and Global Block Areas provide best-practice solutions to problems that had been solved organically in the past.”

New installs now include a wizard explaining how people can get started, and a daily news feed laid out like a magazine helping people learn more over time. The browse marketplace functionality has been dramatically improved, and users can now even purchase add-ons and themes without ever leaving their own sites.

Entrepreneurship Grad Student Launches Service Networking Site Entrepreneurship Grad Student Launches Service Networking Site(0)

Inspired by the 2011 Academy Award nominated film “The Social Network” and the success of Facebook as a mass people-connecting medium, Southern Methodist University entrepreneurship graduate student Zorric Sia has created less of a social and more of a service network with the January 1st, 2011 launch of Yipees.com.

“I recognized the need for a cost effective and efficient way to connect consumers with local contractors and service professionals,” Sia said.

The website is a forum for service professionals to bid on projects posted by residents and businesses and for buyers to review a pool of qualified providers in a particular vocation before selecting one to hire. Following a simple, free sign-up process as either a service buyer or provider, users are connected to a categorized set of listings including handymen, landscapers, plumbers, electricians and all other service-oriented fields down to child care and academic tutoring.

Residents and businesses post their service need, budget and location. Professional service providers are automatically notified of jobs posted in their skill area and can then respond with a bid. The buyers are able to review each bidder’s ratings from previous customers, business information, experience and licenses. Buyers may post an unlimited number of projects with no obligation to hire.

“This time of the year in particular, with the heavy snowfall, has created the need for new roofs, heating system repairs, and pipe repairs,” Sia said. “Yipees.com eliminates having to ask around for reputable repairmen in these areas, and it makes it easy for people who do quality workmanship to get their name out there.”

In celebration of its launch, Yipees.com will be giving away a $500 Visa gift card. Only Yipees.com members are eligible to enter, and all entries must be received by Feb. 28, 2011.

Twitter founder steps down as CEO Twitter founder steps down as CEO(1)

Twitter co-founder Evan Williams is stepping down as CEO to focus on product strategy; COO Dick Costolo will be taking over the top spot.

Twitter co-founder Evan Williams has stepped down as CEO of Twitter, promoting chief operating officer Dick Costolo to take the top seat while WIlliams focuses his attention on “product strategy.” Williams took over the Twitter CEO position from another Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey, in 2007 when Dorsey moved on to become the company’s chairman.

“Success to us means meeting our potential as a profitable company that can retain its culture and user focus while having a positive impact on the world,” Williams wrote in the company blog. “”I am most satisfied while pushing product direction. Building things is my passion, and I’ve never been more excited or optimistic about what we have to build.’

Some industry watchers are heralding the changeover as an indication that Twitter is serious about converting its operations into a money-making enterprise. To date, Twitter has stepped tepidly into the world of value-added services and charging partners for access to the Twitter “firehose” of real-time tweets. However, converting Twitter into a profitable operation is likely to mean embracing a good deal more advertising and revenue tie-ins. Some long-time Twitter fans fear that could seriously undermine the person-to-person and organic communications experience that Twitter offers.

Williams was a driving force behind the recent changes to Twitter’s Web site, which incorporates spaces for users to view linked photos and videos, as well as potential spaces for advertisements and promotions.

Twitter has experienced massive growth in the last two years, jumping from about three million users in 2008 to more than 160 million today. At the same time, Twitter’s payroll has expanded from a few dozen employees to more than 300.

Williams will continue to work for Twitter; his official title now appears to be “co-founder.” Former CEO Dorsey is still chairman of Twitter’s board. Another Twitter co-founder, Biz Stone, is also still with the company.

Facebook Geolocation Software is Coming Soon Facebook Geolocation Software is Coming Soon(0)

Facebook’s long rumored geolocation software is imminent. The program will debut within the next few months.

The social networking giant will soon release its geolocation software as an application programming interface (API), which will allow existing location-based apps to work with Facebook.

“We are working on location features and product integrations, which we’ll be launching in the coming months, and we’ll share more details when appropriate,” spokesman Larry Yu told CNET.

The nature of the app is still a little unclear, but Cnet believes the app will be direct competition for Foursquare, the popular geolocation game based around “checking in”. Others disagree and claim that the program will simply integrate existing geolocation apps with each other, but there is evidence to suggest that Foursquare may soon be the next target for Facebook.

Sources have told Cnet that Facebook is currently working with the developer Localeze, the company responsible for Twitter users being able to attach locations to tweets. Earlier in the year, Facebook also purchased the company Hot Potato, which is known for its “check-in” service. Together the two could easily be used to rival Foursquare.

Facebook was in negotiations to buy Foursquare earlier this year and offered $120 million for the company, but Foursquare was seeking 25-percent more, and Facebook walked away. We will have to wait to find out exactly what Facebook’s geolocation plans are, but they will likely be big.

Facebook Adds Panic Button for Children Facebook Adds Panic Button for Children(0)

Facebook will be adding ClickCEOP child safety “panic buttons” in the UK so children can get help and quickly report suspicious online activity.

Earlier this year, Facebook indicated it was considering working with the UK’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) to add the ClickCEOP “panic button” to Facebook profile pages; today, the company has made good on that promise, with CEOP outlining an agreement that will let Facebook users in the UK put the ClickCEOP button on their homepage via an application. The deal also has Facebook displaying an automatic advertisement message on the home page of every UK Facebook user between 13 and 18 years of age inviting them to add the application to their home page. CEOP is also getting a new Facebook page out of the deal, which will display alerts and polls, as well as teen-oriented information about celebrities, exams, and music along with information about online safety.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our users, which is why we have invested so much in making Facebook one of the safest places on the internet,” said Facebook’s senior VP for the EMEA market Joanna Shields, in a statement. “There is no single silver bullet to making the Internet safer but by joining forces with CEOP we have developed a comprehensive solution which marries our expertise in technology with CEOP’s expertise in online safety.”

The ClickCEOP “panic button” is well-known in the UK, and is widely recognized by children as a way to report suspicious online activity. The panic button was introduced back in 2006 and has been widely adopted by social networking and messaging services in the UK as a way to encourage children to stay safe online, as well as provide a uniform mechanism for reporting suspicious activity and potential sexual predators.

An official presence and increased profile on Facebook should help CEOP’s online child safety campaign: CEOP had previously said that some three quarters of all reports coming to them from social networking sites originated on Facebook.

Twitter Prepping Link Shortening for All Tweets Twitter Prepping Link Shortening for All Tweets(0)

In a bid to save characters – and improve users’ security – Twitter is getting ready to start shortening links in all tweets.

Earlier this year, microblogging site Twitter launched its own URL-shortening service twt.tl, with the idea of reducing the number of characters that a URL takes up in a 140-character tweet and saving space for actual content. URL shortening services like bit.ly and TinyURL have long been popular on the service, and Twitter started slow my applying twt.tl URLs only to direct messages on the service: folks posting public tweets could still use any URL-shortening service they liked. But that’s going to change: beginning sometime this summer, Twitter plans to extend its own URL-shortening to all tweets using a new domain: t.co.

The move is as much about preserving space with the 140-character limit of tweets so users can accompany shared links with messages, but also about protecting users from malicious content, phishing attacks, and and attempts to spread malware. Links that get reported to Twitter as malicious will bring up a warning page before giving users a choice about whether they want to continue on to the link.

One of the downside of URL-shortening services, however, is that they obscure the ultimate destination of a link: a user only sees the shortened URL, and has to rely on context and the trustworthiness of the messages’ sender to decide whether the link is legitimate. Of course, predators have exploited the obscurity of URL-shortening services to distribute malware and mount phishing attacks.

So help alleviate that confusion, Twitter plans to expand long links in Web pages or Twitter applications as the destination URL or page title, going with the shortened URL form only in cases where the overall length of the tweet is vitally important: SMS messages.

Twitter says it will also be using the t.co URL shortening service to gather metrics for the effectiveness of its Promoted Tweets advertising platform.

Twitter is testing the service now on a handful of employee accounts, and developers can begin to prepare their Twitter services and clients. Twitter expects to roll out the service the entire Twitterverse this summer.
