CSR Releases Comprehensive Solution for Bluetooth® Smart Keyboards, Mice and Remote Controls CSR Releases Comprehensive Solution for Bluetooth® Smart Keyboards, Mice and Remote Controls(0)

CSR plc today set out to revolutionize the human interface device (HID) industry with a comprehensive suite of solutions for OEMs to create a new generation of wireless mice, keyboards, remote controls and other Bluetooth® Smart devices that can operate on a single set of batteries for the life of the product. Available now, the CSR range of semiconductors, reference designs and software development kits (SDK) enable the development of Bluetooth Smart Ready PCs, tablets and mobile handsets for use with Smart devices, allowing OEMs to more quickly and easily bring their new products to market, in order to capitalize on the new opportunities this technology offers.

“The Bluetooth Smart logo is a clear statement to consumers that they can expect market leading battery life,” said Paul Williamson, Product Marketing Manager at CSR. “CSR welcomes the Bluetooth SIG adoption of the Bluetooth low energy standard for the future of HID devices. We are pleased to introduce Bluetooth SIG qualified example designs for our customers on day-one of this new standard to help them deliver compelling products to market quickly.”

Remotes provide a good example of some of the exciting possibilities of Bluetooth low energy HID products. Bluetooth low energy remotes overcome the line-of-sight issues traditionally associated with IR remotes, and have faster response times and better battery life. The wide interoperability of the Bluetooth low energy standard will also raise the possibility of “smart remotes”; one remote for multiple subsequent or concurrent television sets and for other devices in the home. Mobile and tablet smart remote apps will also be able to easily deliver advanced features to the consumer such as on-device program guides and gesture control.

CSR provides a full suite of Bluetooth Smart solutions for HID devices including CSR’s dual-mode platforms; CSR8510TM for PCs and CSR8810TM for tablets. Also available are CSR1000TM, CSR’s single-mode platform for simple peripherals, and CSR1001TM the only Bluetooth Smart accessory chip to provide a full single chip solution for advanced keyboards and remotes with 32 I/O lines. CSR also offers a comprehensive ?Energy® SDK for Bluetooth Smart HID development.

Bluetooth Smart technology enables consumers to buy mice with a realistic five-year battery life and keyboard batteries that are designed to last ten years, based on typical usage. CSR has developed several complete Bluetooth Smart HID reference designs to further enable quick, easy, low-cost product development. These designs include integrated functionality such as key matrix scanning and quadrature inputs, and allows for two-layered PCB designs, enabled by our QFN package resulting in lower cost and complexity.

The HID over the Generic Attribute Profile (GATT) specification that has been adopted by the Bluetooth SIG enables the significant benefits of Bluetooth low energy to be applied to HID devices:

  •     More responsive – key press latency as low as 7.5mS
  •     Always connected – no delay in response to the first key press unlike legacy solutions
  •     Unlimited connectivity – Compatible with both Bluetooth Smart and Bluetooth Smart Ready host devices as part of the Bluetooth 4.0 specification

CSR uEnergy silicon achieves this responsive performance providing a complete single-chip keyboard with an average connected current less than 15uA. End products based on CSR’s example designs will be on display at CES in January 2012.

CSR’s complete Bluetooth low energy development package for PCs, peripherals and remote controls is in mass production and available to customers today.

Visit the CSR booth at CES 2012 (South Hall Upper #30337) to see a demonstration of consumer products powered by CSR.

Experience Balanced Armature: it’s just you and the music Experience Balanced Armature: it’s just you and the music(0)

  • Premium in-ear headphone range features ultra-light, compact new Balanced Armature (BA) driver technology by Sony
  • 4 specially-tuned headphones for superb music reproduction (XBA-1, XBA-2, XBA-3, XBA-4)
  • 4 headphones with in-line microphone for iPod/iPhone/iPad (XBA-1iP, XBA-2iP, XBA-3iP, XBA-4iP)
  • World’s first ‘no battery box’ digital noise cancelling headphones (XBA-NC85D)
  • Wireless headphones with Bluetooth® streaming (XBA-BT75)
  • Washable headphones with secure fit for sports (XBA-S65)

Discerning music lovers can step up to a more satisfying listening experience with the newest range of premium in-ear headphones from Sony.

They’re the first headphones from Sony to feature innovative new Balanced Armature (BA) technology that radically reduces driver size compared with conventional dynamic headphones. This advanced new design delivers superb sound quality, high sensitivity and enhanced noise isolation. For the first time, it also allows multiple drivers to be combined in a single headphone to achieve unprecedented levels of sonic transparency, detail and musicality.

The XBA range spans 11 high-performance models to cover a wide range of lifestyles and listening preferences.

Balanced Armature driver technology: a breakthrough by Sony in in-ear listening

At the heart of the new headphone series is an innovative Balanced Armature (BA) drive unit developed specially by Sony.

Less than a quarter the size of a conventional 13.5mm dynamic drive unit, the Balanced Armature driver offers comparable sensitivity in a sealed, ultra-light unit that delivers ultra-detailed sound.

Unlike conventional full-range dynamic drivers, individual BA units can be ‘tuned’ for optimal reproduction of bass, midrange or high frequencies. What’s more, the tiny size of each BA driver means that several units can be combined in a single headphone – just like hi-fi speakers with separate woofer, tweeter and midrange units.

As well as contributing to a supremely comfortable in-ear fit, the tiny BA driver’s Noise Blocking Structure improves sound insulation – both into and out of the headphone. Compared with dynamic driver designs, extraneous sounds entering the ear are reduced for a more immersive listening experience with less distraction from outside noise. Sound leakage out of the headphone is also reduced, ensuring that your listening stays more private while other people are around.

Enclosing the drive units, XBA-1/2/3/4 models feature a double-layered housing. This vibration-damping design cuts unwanted resonance for exceptionally smooth upper/midrange reproduction.

XBA-1, XBA-2, XBA-3, XBA-4 in-ear headphones

Whether you’re a fan of jazz, vocals, classical or urban beats, you’ll find the in-ear headphone from Sony that’s perfectly in tune with your listening tastes.

With its single full-range Balanced Armature driver, the XBA-1 delivers superb reproduction of any music source with an emphasis on clear, crystalline vocals.

The XBA-2 adds an additional low-frequency (woofer) drive unit, making it the perfect choice for dance fans who demand pumping bass beats.

The XBA-3 gains a third high-frequency driver (tweeter) that gives an ultra-detailed polish to high frequencies.

For the most dedicated audiophile, the XBA-4 features no less than four drive units: full-range, woofer and tweeter plus an additional super-woofer for extended sub-bass.

XBA-1iP, XBA-2iP, XBA-3iP, XBA-4iP in-ear headphones for iPod/iPhone/iPad

Ideal for mobile music lovers, XBA-1iP, XBA-2iP, XBA-3iP, XBA-4iP models add the convenience of an in-line remote to control music player functions. There’s also an integrated mic that lets iPhone users enjoy hands–free calls.

XBA-NC85D in-ear headphones with digital noise cancelling

Enjoy your favourite sounds in blissful silence with the XBA-NC85D: the world’s smallest, lightest in-ear digital noise cancelling (DNC) headphones. The micro-sized BA driver also allows space within the headphone body for an integrated power-saving DNC processor plus microphone and rechargeable battery. This space-saving design makes the XBA-NC85D the world’s first ‘box-free’ digital noise cancelling in-ear headphone.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) noise cancelling technology automatically analyses background noise, reducing ambient noise by 97.5%. Battery life is an extra-long 20 hours. The headphones can be conveniently recharged via USB from any PC: just plug the audio jack into the supplied USB-AC charging adaptor.

XBA-BT75 Bluetooth® in-ear wireless headphones

Enjoy the convenience of listening to wire-free music streaming from your smartphone or other Bluetooth®-enabled devices. Offering a stylish, comfortable fit, the XBA-BT75 accommodates tiny BA drivers as well as Bluetooth® receiver and antenna within the headphone itself. There’s also space within the headphone housing for a rechargeable battery that provides power for 3.5 hours uninterrupted wireless listening.

Like the XBA-NC85D, this ‘no battery box’ solution eliminates the need for a separate control box to house electronics and power source. The supplied carry case doubles as a handy ultra-portable charging station. With its own integral battery, the case gives power for up to 2.5 recharge cycles of the headphone: plenty to power up your ‘phones for the commute home after a day at work.

XBA-S65 in-ear sports headphones

Designed to match contours of the ear for a secure, comfortable fit, the XBA-S65 brings a more detailed, hi-fidelity soundtrack to your workout or run.

Washable and waterproof, it features a high sound transmission waterproof film coating that protects the driver from splashes and brief immersion. It’s ideal for rain-soaked training sessions or even that post-workout shower.

The adjustable ear loop mechanism provides for secure, fitting comfort – all without sacrificing audio performance and maintaining superb sound quality.

The new range of premium in-ear headphones with Balanced Armature technology from Sony is available from beginning of April 2012.

Launch of New App Bluefree Messenger™ – Business Card Instant Messenger App for BlackBerry® Users Launch of New App Bluefree Messenger™ – Business Card Instant Messenger App for BlackBerry® Users(0)

Bluefree Messenger™ is a new free Instant Messenger application that uses Bluetooth along with your 3G data package to help find new business contacts. The newly launched Beta version is available to all BlackBerry® Users in several languages such as English, French, Russian, Spanish, Dutch, German, Greek, Italian with more languages in development.

Zuber Mohsan, the CEO of Bluefree Messenger™, explained, “Instant Messengers such as BlackBerry® BBM all share one simple function, to send messages to friends or business contacts. One of the issues that BBM users face is how to grow the number of contacts in their instant messenger app. The answer is Bluefree Messenger™. It’s simple, easy to use, works internationally, is multilingual, secure and free”.

Bluefree is a light application that does not interfere with your normal Bluetooth devices such as headsets or car kits. Bluefree does all of its work in the background and can be kept permanently switched on without draining your phone battery. The simple technology is efficient and fast so your phone can be used as normal.

Zuber Mohsan created the app when he realised that in a room full of people it is not always possible to speak to everyone you would like to meet. Bluefree Messenger™ allows users to have their phone do the networking for them, and then afterwards you can review and consolidate would-be contacts.

Bluefree Messenger™ uses patent pending Bluetooth technology to find new contacts that are in close proximity, quickly and effortlessly, wherever you may be. Once a fellow Bluefree Messenger™ user is detected, their business card will appear inside Bluefree Messenger™ app. It works without interruption safely gathering business cards. Simply by walking past a person, will receive their business card. No need to stop, say or do anything. View their business card details: phone number, email address, website including a photo, and personal profile. If it feels like the person will be of value to your business, simply send them an invitation to join contacts , where both can chat via the inbuilt messenger.

Zuber commented, “It can be daunting to walk into a room full of people at an event or networking function and not know anyone. Put Bluefree Messenger™ to work and you are immediately in touch with people with whom you already share a rapport. It’s a great ice breaker.”

When attending business exhibitions or conferences for example, Visitors may not have chance to speak to everyone but their phones have been networking for them. Bluefree has silently gathered business cards from other Bluefree users that came within a 20ft (7m) range of peoples phone, In your own time you can browse the newly found business cards of the people that may have walked past and select who, if any, you wish to invite to contacts using the phone’s data connection.

Users may already have invitations from other users and again, you can choose whether to accept them. Once accepted, User can chat using the inbuilt messenger. Once added, a contact can view personal profiles which may contain up to four pictures and other pertinent information such as Facebook ID, BBM Pin etc. It is entirely up to the user how much information is added to share with friends and contacts.

The patent pending Bluefree technology is safe, with all data held in secure server vault in Germany. It does not require pairing or accepting data via Bluetooth, and is flexible enough to allow the user to customise usage through the “Options” menu. Features include:

Features Unique to Bluefree Messenger™

  •     Full control of how you gather contacts
  •     Delivery, Read Receipt including the Time message read notification.
  •     Change the colour of your Flashing LED for new message notification.
  •     Decide on your Bluetooth sending and receiving options Send only, receive only, both or Stop.

Jaybird Freedom Wireless Handsfree Bluetooth Headphones – Review Jaybird Freedom Wireless Handsfree Bluetooth Headphones – Reviewreview(0)

Review by Chris Towland – Gadget Editor

With about ten minutes of use the Jaybird Freedom became my first choice of headphones to use with my iPhone!

Firstly, as soon as I opened the box I knew this was a quality product – from the quality of the packaging to the case you keep your headphones in, to the actual Jaybird Freedom’s themselves – you can see and feel the quality.

Next ease of use – It took me two minutes to sync the headphones to the Blutoooth on my iPhone and be up and running. (Please note that I’m mentioning my iPhone in this review as that is what I tested the headphones on, but the Freedom’s can be used with any Bluetooth device including other smartphones, iPad etc)

Handsfree – Because they’re Bluetooth and handsfree it means my iPhone can be in my back pocket but there’s no wire trailing up my back and pulling the earphones out of my ears. This makes them ideal for use when jogging or at the gym (none of the usual wires inside or outside your t-shirt / coat conundrum).

Quality of sound – I’m a gadget man and not a sound expert but the Freedom’s gave a better, richer sound compared to any of the other iPhone headphones I compared them to.

Comfort – Because the Jaybird Freedom’s are supplied with a selection of eartips of differing sizes it is easy to find the ones that are just right for your ears. Once I had the right tips I found them very comfortable to wear and had no issues with them falling out of my ears.

Recharging – The headphones have a built in battery that lasted for hours and recharging is done via the USB cable supplied.

Control – Volume can be controlled from the headphones themselves so no need to dig your music device out of your pocket. Also because of the built in microphone I could answer phone calls and chat with the Freedom’s just like any Bluetooth headset.

So, did I find any problems with the Freedom’s?  Yes I did but they were very minor. Firstly, because the chord that goes round the back of your neck is rubber, I found that sometimes it stuck to my neck slightly when turning my head. This was more of a small inconvenience though rather than a problem and could be removed greatly by adjusting the length of the chord.

Also, I found that very occasionally if I turned my head rapidly, I lost sound briefly. I’m guessing this was somehow a short loss of the Bluetooth connection which was quickly regained. This really didn’t cause me a problem but I wanted to mention it so you had my full findings on these headphones.

Finally, the price at £99 certainly will be an issue for some when of course you can buy a cheap set of earphones for a few pounds but I think when considering the quality of product and sound as well as the benefits of handsfree / wire free Bluetooth, the Freedom’s are good value.

All in all I found the Jaybird Freedom’s to be superb, high quality headphones that were a joy to wear. If you value quality sound and ease of use – or you just like to be ultra cool with the very latest gadgets – you’ll find the Jaybird Freedom Wireless Handsfree Bluetooth Headphones an ideal choice.

Here’s the official info from the manufacturer:

Tiny, fitted with a tangle free flat cord and lightweight (16g only), these headphones are ideal to move freely as your music is travelling with you without disturbing your flow. Smartphone in your

pocket and Freedom in your ears – perfect complements to your active lifestyle. Marvel as you bring music to your world!

Freedom have been specially designed to fit securely in your ears thanks to GeckoGrip active eartips by Jaybird. Enhancing isolation, these GeckoGrip eartips cling to your ear canal and hold the headphones steadily to your ears. And no worries Jaybird thought about all your inimitable ears, you will find in the box a multitude of eartips enables you to find the perfect fit for even the most unique of ears.

Pair Freedom up with your Bluetooth music device (itouch, iPad, iPhone, Smartphone etc) and off you go! That’s you ready to run at the gym or run to catch your bus. You will also be able to receive calls anywhere through the integrated microphone – it could be on the treadmill or on a bath!

The Freedom pull off the almost-impossible by delivering you top-quality sound. With its bassy beats, these headphones deliver CD quality sound with Apt-X. Crank up the volume and enjoy your favourite songs.

iPad Bluetooth App to Replace Wi-Fi in the Cockpit iPad Bluetooth App to Replace Wi-Fi in the Cockpit(0)

ASiQ Limited, the developers of the patented in-flight SafeCell mobile phone system, announced today that they have developed an iPad Bluetooth App that can overcome the problems associated with the use of Wi-Fi in aircraft cockpits.

Recently, Wi-fi hit the headlines regarding interference with cockpit displays. It was reported that under testing, Wi-fi managed to blank out the cockpit displays on a B737NG, which resulted in Boeing suspending Wi-fi installations. This has become an issue for airlines wanting to use iPad’s in the cockpit for crew communications, as part of their Electronic Flight Bags programs “EFB”.

http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2011/03/10/354179/wi-fi-interference-with-honeywell-avionics-prompts-boeing.html

Ron Chapman, ASiQ’s CEO, stated “the issue for Wi-Fi is that under certification testing, in order to provide an acceptable safety margin, wireless transmitters are powered up to 5 times their maximum power. In the case of Wi-Fi, it turns a 1000 milliwatt transmitter into a 5000 milliwatt transmitter. Now compare this to the Intel Aircraft safety Report on Bluetooth.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/7156308/Aircraft-Safety-Report-for-Bluetooth

During aircraft testing, Bluetooth was powered up to 500 times its normal power and at a distance of only 10 cm, was still below the aircraft standards. So it is fairly safe to assume that Bluetooth at 5 times its normal power should not be an issue at all.”

Ron also said “it was during the development of our new iPhone App for corporate jets, that we realised we could deliver a similar data service on the iPad. What makes it really exciting is that our iPhone Bluetooth proprietary software currently allows up to 3 Apple devices to communicate simultaneously, which means that both pilots and the head of the cabin crew could all have access. Combine this with our satellite/radio controller and message distribution software and you now have a very low cost mobile solution that airlines can implement for crew data communications.”

Revolabs Introduces xTag BT™ for the Desktop Revolabs Introduces xTag BT™ for the Desktop(0)

Revolabs, a leading provider of wireless unified communications products for the enterprise, today introduced its next generation of wireless microphones for the desktop at InfoComm 2011 in Orlando, Florida.  Revolabs xTag BT™ wireless microphones are based on the company’s revolutionary wireless audio technology providing desktop users with superior sound quality.

With the xTag BT, Revolabs now offers their first Bluetooth enabled microphone for wideband speech, allowing the microphone to be paired to any Bluetooth® enabled device, including cell phones, MP3 players, or computers.  Revolabs xTag BT provides bi-directional audio and includes in-ear headphones so that the product works both as a microphone and headset. The xTag BT supports HFP and A2DP profiles allowing users to listen to their cell phone and music.  Unlike most Bluetooth devices, Revolabs xTag BT also supports the wideband speech profile, resulting in transmission of a wider frequency spectrum and better audio quality.

The wide range of supported Bluetooth profiles and bi-directional audio make xTag BT the perfect wireless microphone for a range of professional audio applications including soft phones, computer telephony and video applications like Skype™ or messenger software.  Web meeting applications and speech recognition are additional environments where Revolabs xTag BT can provide the best wireless audio experiences.  The xTag BT provides superior audio quality along with the freedom of a wireless solution.

Revolabs xTag BT includes a customized USB dongle that supports the superior audio quality users have learned to expect from Revolabs products.  The USB dongle enables Bluetooth communication with the xTag BT microphone, while interacting with a computer as a USB audio device.

The Revolabs xTag BT automatically assigns priorities to different profiles.  If a cell phone call or a call on the computer comes in while the user is listening to music, Revolabs xTag BT automatically switches the profile, and gives the call a higher priority.  Once the call is completed, playback of the music resumes.

“Our customers have asked us for a wireless audio solution for the desktop market,” said Holger Stoltze, Revolabs senior product manager. “They needed a form factor and quality solution similar to what we have provided for their boardroom and conference rooms. Revolabs xTag BT brings this quality at an affordable price for these applications.  We now deliver unified communications solutions to enterprise desktops, executive offices, conference rooms, and board rooms.”

Revolabs xTag BT talk time lasts up to eight hours before any recharging with the USB cable is required.  Recharge time is approximately two hours.  Revolabs xTag BT will be available in the third calendar quarter through Revolabs distributors.

As wireless connectivity becomes a growing trend, more and more mobile devices are hitting the market with built-in Bluetooth. However, very few audio equipment such as speaker systems and portable stereos come standard with Bluetooth and do not work with Bluetooth enabled devices like the Apple iPod or iPhone. With the introduction of AirBlue, you can gear-up existing speakers to conveniently support Bluetooth connectivity.

Designed to connect with your AV receiver and speakers by acting as a Bluetooth receiver, Kanex AirBlue enables you to play your tunes wirelessly keeping your device portable at distances up to 33ft away. With no need for external power, portability on both ends is maximized.

“Kanex AirBlue is the first-ever Kanex AV solution designed specifically with smartphones and mobile devices in mind,” states Kashyap Khetia, Kanex Product Marketing Manager. “The AirBlue offers portability unlike any other device on the market. And it’s the perfect complement to speakers and AV stereos of all shapes and sizes.”
