The candy-coated FloBox and FloBox Mini iPad speaker docks push SpeakerCraft’s attention to a new generation, while the Vital 250 makes its mark as the first amp with integrated iPad dock on the market.

For a company that built its reputation on custom in-wall speaker systems, SpeakerCraft made an unlikely candidate to bring out iPad docks that look like they belong in the aisles at Best Buy, but that’s exactly what the company unveiled at CEDIA on Wednesday. The company has shifted its focus from audiophiles down to mass-market consumers with the new Vital 250 amplifier, FloBox and FloBox Mini all-in-one systems, all of which feature built-in iPad docks.

The FloBox and FloBox Mini both make an appeal to younger generations with cleaner industrial design, eye-catching piano gloss finishes and compact, dorm-friendly form factors. They offer iPad connectivity through a dock on the top, plus built-in speakers, USB inputs, FM tuners, and on the larger unit, a traditional CD drive. The distinctive box-on-a-pedestal design features a front grille that drops down to reveal a strip of controls and an LED display. SpeakerCraft hasn’t announced full availability details, but the full-size FloBox will retail for $399.

The first amplifier on the market with an integrated iPad dock, the Vital 250 allows users to drop the entire tablet on top for music playback and charging, or wirelessly zip music to it from the couch with built-in AirPlay compatibility. True to SpeakerCraft’s audiophile legacy, it will also upconvert compressed MP3s to improve sound quality. It offers two-channel output at 50 watts per channel, and a similar design to SpeakerCraft’s other pro-grade amps, but with a smaller footprint made to nestle into a bedroom or beside a computer, plus a down-market price tag of $699.

The Altec Lansing Octiv MIni audio dock offers clear sound with a small footprint – and iPhone and iPod touch users can use it as an alarm clock.

Audio gear maker Altec Lansing has unleashed another iPod/iPhone audio solution: the Octiv Mini multifunction audio dock. Designed for iPod and iPhone users, the Octiv Mini is designed to give clear, high-quality sound output in a footprint that’s a fraction of the size of many iPod-compatible speaker solutions—plus iPhone and iPod touch users can leverage Altec Lansing’s Alarm Rock app to use the Octiv Mini as an alarm clock.

“Because the Octiv Mini functions as a dock, a charger and an alarm clock with the included app, it represents an amazing value that will be appreciated by those who will not compromise on sound quality for a smaller footprint,” said Altec Lansing product manager stated Steve Schlangen, in a statement.

The Octiv Mini measures just four inches wide and about five inches deep, so it can be set up on almost any available service. The unit features a single 3-inch driver with Altec Lansing’s Audio Alignment promise that the components and design are balanced for decent sound: the company says it stands up against larger speaker systems. The unit is also shielded from interference from cell phones and other electronics.
